Radial Velocity precision calculator

Based on "Radial Velocity Photon Limits for the Dwarf Stars of Spectral Classes F-M" (Reiners & Zechmeister, 2020, ApJS, 247, 1) [pdf].

Input the values of your object and check for the optimum wavelength for which to measure radial velocities (RV).
Description of the values given by hovering with the mouse over each value.

If SNR is selected, then magnitude and mirror diameter modifications alone do not influence the RV precision, only the observing time τobs is recalculated.
If however τobs is selected, then magnitude and mirror diameter will change the SNR and thus the RV precision.
If you wish to get a radial velocity precision for a certain wavelength range, please set it using λmin and λmax. It is possible to switch between J- and V-magnitude and doing so will refresh the SNR using the given J- resp. V-magnitude. Parameter changes can be applied by pressing <Enter>.
